“When we relocated here from the Twin Cities area I was out of network for my Palliative Care. I have a Mitochondrial Disease known as MELAS, it is a neurodegenerative condition. Along with that I have other health issues that have led to a decline of quality of life, which is why I am in Palliative. At Health Partners I had an amazing team. They talked with doctors, helped with decisions, spiritual care, and overall I had an amazing experience, which helped me stabilize quite a bit. I have been increasingly disappointed in CentraCare's team. The person I got at the beginning understood that I needed virtual visits. When you have a condition that causes random vision loss and some days requires a wheelchair adding to that I don't have transportation all the time it can be a challenge. The provider had a hard time understanding that sometimes I need things compounded into lotions as swallowing can be difficult. The simple things that I never had problems with at HP, like getting anti-nausea medication became challenges. There is also communication breakdowns. Some of my records were sent to a provider at a clinic I do not see. I was also referred to Hospice, but since I do not have dying on my agenda at this time, I politely declined. Now I am being transferred to a new provider in the system, Which is fine in itself, but the visit needs to be in person. Even though I am an established patient. I asked if the visit could be pushed off to the spring as I also have a Primary Immunodeficiency and my immunologist has asked me to do virtual visits. I was told that it was mandatory to come in and if I didn't come in during this timeframe I would be dismissed from the program. Palliative Care exists to to improve the quality of life for patients and families facing serious, chronic, or life-threatening illnesses. It provides a specialized, interdisciplinary layer of support to relieve physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering—such as pain, anxiety, or fatigue—alongside curative treatments. CentraCare has become so wrapped up in rules, paperwork, and structure that they have departed from their mission. Right now my requests are being "reviewed" by another department. Which means I have gone over a month without valuable services. Look, I don't expect every place to understand my rare. To be honest, most Drs are trained to think horses vs zebras, which means they look for the common. What I do expect is them to listen to the patient. My lived experience and knowledge of what works and what doesn't, not to mention what is safe for me vs puts me in danger. So I don't think asking for a virtual appointment is the end of the world as they know it. Even if the provider is new to me, I am not new to the clinic. Or letting me wait for a whole couple of weeks until March when I am allowed to go back to in person appointments. I still think this is a savagable situation but at this point, it is up to CentraCare to rise to the challenge and live out their mission statement to improve the health of every patient, every day, by providing expert, compassionate care close to home.”

“All employees (Nurses, OT, PT, Social Workers, Physicians) involved in my Uncle's care, have been absolutely amazing! They gave me updates on his status, as well as kept me informed regarding tests, care plans, etc. I recruit for a healthcare system in Sioux Falls, SD and I would hire every single one of these amazing care givers!”
